Desert Tapes are my lo-fi ‘bedroom’ recordings from the 1980s. And I do mean real lo-fi as you’ll hear. The songs were originally recorded on cassette p or reel to reel tapes and bounced from one tape to another numerous times. I have restored them where possible, but frankly in this digital world I love hearing a bit of sonic wonkiness.

Some of the songs were ‘soundtracks’ for friends super-8 movies, some were student projects, but most were just for fun. All I had was a couple of cassette decks, a borrowed 4 track tape recorder, a couple of mono synths, a crappy pump organ, a guitar and a few guitar pedals. Primitive but fun.

I was in my late teens, early twenties and was listening to a lot of early Pink Floyd, Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk and particularly Brian Eno. But I’d also just discovered Sonic Youth, Husker Du and others in the USA underground scene. Somehow Desert Tapes was a mish-mash of all these influences filtered through my sci-fi brain and crappy equipment.

And to be honest at the time I was a bit embarrassed about it all and the tapes gathered dust for decades. Only in recent years have I begun to appreciate it and recognised in it the seeds of the music I make today.
